The project is a series of portraits that link together with the same simple string held by people from around the world. When exhibited, all their photos link forming one continuous line, a visible representation symbolizing an invisible connection. THE STRING PROJECT is both art and a social experience as the photographs highlight our similarities, sharing the idea that “we are all connected.”

Chelsea Nix (Indiana) and Mariano Cortez (Argentina) are a husband and wife photography team that specialize in travel photography, recognized and published National Geographic.  In 2018 the couple created a photography project called THE STRING PROJECT that won one of the worlds largest international art competitions, ArtPrize.

In January 2018 the THE STRING PROJECT began featuring photographs from Africa, Europe, Asia, North and Latin America. To create this body of work, Nix and Cortez had a goal to capture as many portraits as they could, including all people despite their economic situation, race, or culture. They traveled to 4 continents in under 6 months on budget of around $30/day.  The couple thinks that “we are all part of this world: we love, we suffer, these are all things that we have in common, that connect us. The physical string visually represents a connection that cannot be see with the naked eye.  The project highlights some of the most valuable things in life: respect, hope, peace, compassion, love, empathy, integrity… authentic and genuine interactions that humans crave.”

Their award-winning exhibit will be displayed for viewing at The Roots Festival on Wednesday, August 21, for the Chef’s Dinner at 21c Hotel in  Bentonville, as well as at the Pratt Place in Fayetteville on August 22nd. In October 2019 the could will be taking THE STRING PROJECT on a World Tour for viewing in outdoor public exhibits and indoor private galleries.
